Name: Akira Kurusu
Series: Persona 5 Royal
Timeline: Post-series, True Ending
Canon Resource Links: P5R Spoilers
Personality: At a glance, Akira is a quiet and unassuming boy with good manners. Funnily enough, he's also labelled as a delinquent from the very beginning of the game. He's perceived by his peers and teachers to be a troublemaker because of his (wrongful) probation period, thanks to Masayoshi Shido, and is an outcast at school because of it. Still, he tends to keep to himself and doesn't say more than he needs to, contributing to his overall timid exterior.
That, however, is pretty much a ruse. The real Akira Kurusu has a strong sense of justice and wants to fight against people who abuse their power. He's incredibly strong-willed and was willing to go up against Shido -- a high-profile politician -- in the beginning of the game to protect a woman the man was assaulting. Even though Shido used his influence to turn the tables on Akira, the latter still stands firm in his beliefs and continues to fight against injustices alongside his new comrades as Joker, the leader of the Phantom Thieves.
When Akira turns into Joker in the Metaverse, we see more of his inherent qualities: He's sneaky, very skilled at fighting, and most of all, confident as hell. When he commits to something he goes all in, and he's not afraid to show off a little, too. He gets flamboyant in his movements and isn't afraid to show his enemies that he's better than them; on occasion, he'll even knock down his opponents with his team and demand money from them. He can make decisions on the fly, as wielding multiple Personas does require a lot of decision-making, and solve tricky puzzles inside of Palaces, though not without the help of his team. Akira's very sure of himself, and it's that charisma and confidence that help his fellow Phantom Thieves believe in him. It isn't that he doesn't feel confident outside of being Joker; it's just that being in the Metaverse gives him the freedom to be himself fully.
Akira's desire to rebel against society extends beyond the Metaverse, too. This idea of helping others stand up for themselves shows in his Confidants; for example, he helps Chihaya Mifune quit a corrupt organization that would scam people out of their money. Another example of this is when he encourages Ann Takamaki to not give in and push back against Kamoshida for all of his wrongdoings. He's encouraging and supportive of the people he forms connections with; he's also very patient and understanding of their circumstances, too, and cares about his friends very deeply.
SPOILERS for P5R: Beyond that tired expression Akira tends to wear lies a kind boy who only wants the best for the people he cares about. In the new Royal content, Dr. Maruki creates a reality in which everyone can obtain their deepest desires and live out their happiest lives. Morgana becomes human, Ann can spend more time with Shiho, and the deceased come back to life -- namely Wakaba Isshiki and Goro Akechi. The latter is, unbeknownst to Akira until later, the result of his own desire for Akechi to get a second chance at life. Furthermore, while his friends are caught up in their false reality, he battles with wanting his friends to be happy and living truthfully. He also struggles with deciding whether or not to let Akechi live, the latter being against Akechi's wishes. Akira absolutely believes in giving people who were victims like he was second chances; he even rescues Maruki after defeating him in his Palace, because Dr. Maruki didn't have malicious intent.
Akira is also pretty damn cheeky sometimes and will give dry, sarcastic responses. His dialogue is optional in the game When he enters Leblanc and sees Akechi there, he has the option greets him with, "Honey, I'm home." When Morgana complains about almost getting kidnapped, Akira replies with, "Darn. Next time..." He thinks he's funny. He tries.
However, he's not above having weakness. In fact, Akira is very reckless to the point where he can be self-sacrificial. This is most prominent when the Phantom Thieves plotted against Akechi. Akira and the Thieves successfully thwarted Akechi's plan to kill Akira, but it required enacting a very meticulous plan that essentially put Akira's life at stake. He would've died if they'd made one misstep, basically. He'll also do outrageous things outside of the Metaverse, like take on the Big Bang Burger Challenge multiple times, work four part-time jobs simultaneously, and sneak into Sojiro's house while he's not home so he and the other Thieves can talk to Futaba.
Finally, while Akira seems very calm and collected on the outside, he's actually got a lot of pent up rage towards society. It's what fuels his awakening of Arsene, after all, with the Persona telling him to "release thy rage" after asking Akira if helping the woman from the beginning of the game was a mistake. He uses this anger -- which is especially targeted towards Shido -- to drive him forward and helps the other Phantom Thieves exact revenge on the adults who hurt them.
So while there doesn't seem to be a lot to Akira at a first glance, he's got a lot going on beneath the surface. He's funny, caring and kind; but he's also driven, rebellious and fueled by his resentment towards society. Those who know him well can see these qualities, and he's certainly more honest about who he is around those who count on him.

Victory Road Sample: [ When the feed opens, Akira's face is in clear view, but so is his Toxel's. Akira has Toxel's paw in between his fingers, and gives the paw a little wave to the camera. It's a funny image, given that Toxel just looks so disgruntled about being filmed, but Akira seems pleased and lets his Pokemon chill on his lap after the wave.
Then, he finally sends his message: ]
Toxel and I are gearing up for our first gym battle here, and we want to make sure we're prepared before we walk in. I'm guessing that we'll get a rematch if we lose, but it's better to just get it done the first time.
[ That's what he thinks, anyway. It's a good thing electric types are effective against flying Pokemon, so Akira doesn't think he'll lose, but it doesn't hurt to strategize a little. He's used to doing that back at home, anyway. ]
If you win, you get a gym badge, but are there any other helpful rewards that come with it?
[ Like...a billion potions or something. While a commemorative token is nice, Akira's also hoping for something a little more to help him on his journey. ]
And how tough are the trainers leading up to the leader in Violet City? ... If you don't feel like answering, please wish us luck anyway. I think Toxel's a little nervous about this.
[ Toxel lets out a little grunt at that. It's hard to tell if it's one of agreement or if it's out of discontentment. ]
